Waikiki Beach

We have moved from our quiet quarters at Hickam Air Force Base to downtown Honolulu. Our room is on the 14th floor of the famous Hale Koa Military Hotel right on Waikiki Beach. It has all the amenities of the next door Hilton. The rear gardens are spacious and filled with lovely flowers, shrubs and trees. The view of the beach and ocean from the balcony of our room is fabulous. We do not need a rental car, as everything we need is here, including the largest shopping mall in Hawaii.
This was SuperBowl Sunday, and there was a big party in the hotel sponsored by an Oahu country music station. We estimate that over 400 attended the "Giant Upset." However, the greatest event of the day was a beach church service. Alex (photographed below with us) and his volunteer staff have been conducting this ministry for 30 years. He has a wonderful voice, as he used to be a professional singer. Near a big American flag, he began the service with a trilogy of patriotic songs, to include the Star Spangled Banner. The big JBL speakers belted out the music and the biblical message, and a big crowd of beachcomers gathered. A unique feature was a Christian hula dancer, who calls her dance an "inspirational hula."

The day would not have been complete without a beach photo of the "flats," our children and grandchildren who helped make this trip possible.
